Low Waste Living Pt 2: Sex

Welcome to the second in our series of how to not make trash. Today’s subject: sex. You may be thinking “How does sex impact the environment?”. Well aside from the obvious (children) there’s a few. Birth control to condoms, a lot of trash can be made. That being said, I’m never going to encourage not using either of those things. I’m going to do just the opposite. There’s sustainable options!

As far as birth control, the most sustainable option is a Paragard, or copper IUD. These little guys are inserted into the uterus and just hang out in there. It interferes with sperm movement and egg fertilization. The copper helps it be more effective in both those things. Best of all, its lasts 10 years and is hormone free. You can learn more on their website or my previous post on birth control. The downside is that Paragards DO NOT prevent STIs. Its okay, though. Condoms are a thing!

Unfortunately, there’s not a biodegradable condom yet (that I’m aware of). That doesn’t mean lose hope. Sustain Natural sells condoms that are free of known carcinogens, use fair trade latex, are cruelty free, and vegan. On top of that, they donate 10% to organizations that support women! Get $5 off here.

Of course the most sustainable option is abstinence. If you aren’t having sex, you can’t create waste with it!

Stay safe. Stay educated. Love yourself and others. If there’s something you want to know how to do waste-free, just let us know!

Every good wish,
